Moscow Aeroflot op-A 16th , 24.02.2017
This was one of my favourite games from my Russian nightmare - The Aeroflot Open! 1. Кf3 c5 2. c4 b6 3. d4 [3. g3 Сb7 4. Сg2 Кf6 5. O-O Here we reach a major deviation, Black has two types of pawn formations. 5... g6 (5... e6 is the hedgehog type. 6. Кc3 Сe7 7. d4 cd4 8. Фd4 d6 9. Сg5 a6 10. Сf6 Сf6 11. Фf4 O-O 12. Лfd1 Сe7 13. Кe4 Сe4 14. Фe4 Лa7 15. Кd4 was an impressive display in (Carlsen-Gashimov 2012)) 6. d4 cd4 7. Фd4 Сg7 8. Кc3 d6 (8... Кc6 is tempting, but the knight is better placed on d7. 9. Фf4 (The following game is one of the best games I have played if you look with a human eye and one of the worst if you look with a computer! 9. Фh4 h6! 10. Кd5 (It was better to accept the mistake and come back with 10. Фf4!?) 10... Лc8 11. Кd2 Кa5 (11... e6! would have given Black a huge advantage!) 12. Кe3 Now things are not so bad for White anymore. 12... Сg2 13. Крg2 O-O 14. Лd1 Фc7 15. b3! Braveheart! 15... Фb7 16. Крg1 g5?! An unnecessary provocation. 17. Фh3 Кe4 18. Кf5!! A whole rook sacrifice! 18... Сa1 19. Кe7 Крg7 20. Кf5 Крg8 21. Кh6 Крg7 22. Кf5 Крg8 23. Фg4!! One of the toughest moves of the game! 23... Лfe8 24. Кe4 Фe4 25. Фg5 Крh7 26. Лd7 Лc6 (26... Фe6 White has many ways to win here after 27. Фh5 Крg8 28. Лf7 is one of the simplest.) 27. Лf7 Крh8 28. Фh5 Крg8 29. Фh7# 1-0 (29) Adhiban,B (2677)-Swayams,M (2465) Pune IND 2016) 9... Фb8 10. Лd1 Фf4 11. Сf4 (So-Ashwin Pro Chess League INT 2017) was a solid plus for White.) 9. b3!? is Eljanov's preference. (9. Лd1 Кbd7 10. Сe3 Лc8 11. Лac1 O-O 12. Фh4 a6 13. b3 Лe8 (Another branch is 13... Лc7!? 14. Сh3 Фb8) 14. Сh3 Сa8 Black is holding well in this line.) 9... Кbd7 10. Сb2 O-O 11. Лfd1 Кe4 12. Фe3 Кc3 13. Сc3 Сc3 14. Фc3 Фc7 15. Фe3 Кf6 16. Лd4! Starting the kingside onslaught! 16... h5 (16... Сf3!? would have been a safer option getting rid of the knight.) 17. Фh6 Фc5 18. Лad1 Лad8 (18... Сf3 19. Сf3 Лad8 20. Лd5 Кd5 21. Лd5 followed by Rxh5 with a crushing attack. 21... Фa3 22. Лh5! gh5 23. Сe4 winning.) 19. Кg5 e5 20. Сb7 ed4 21. Сd5 (Eljanov-Karjakin World Cup Tromsoe 2013) A crushing victory for White.] [Another good alternative was 3. Кc3 Сb7 4. e4 e6 5. d4 cd4 6. Кd4 with a complex fight.] 3... cd4 4. Кd4 Сb7 5. f3 [5. Кc3 Кf6 and now only 6. f3 followed by e4 and we will reach a Maroczy bind. 6... Кc6 (6... d5 7. cd5 Кd5 8. Кd5) 7. e4 e6 8. Сe3 Сc5 9. Фd2 O-O 10. Сe2 (10. Кc6 Сc6 (Ponkratov-Kamsky 2016) was slightly worse for Black.) 10... d5 (Radek-Salgado 2014) with full equality, although White showed nice technique to win the game.] 5... e6!? 6. e4 [It was possible to gain a pleasant position after 6. Кb5! Фh4 (6... d6 7. Сf4! (7. e4 a6 8. Кd4 White just lost a tempo for no reason :).) 7... e5 8. Сe3 С инициативой у белых with strong compensation for the pawn.] 6... Кc6 [Black could have actually even played 6... Фh4!? 7. g3 Фd8 8. Кc3 Кc6 9. Сe3 Later on I can follow up with Bg2 if needed, hence it shouldn't be such a big deal.] 7. Кc3 Фb8!? [Black could have tried to play without Qb8. 7... Сc5!? 8. Сe3 Кge7] 8. Сe3 Сc5 [8... Сd6 I can coolly ignore with 9. Фd2] 9. Фd2 Кge7 10. O-O-O O-O 11. Кdb5?! I played this without thinking,since it looked so natural, fighting for the d4-square! [Always look out for tactics! 11. Кc6! White wins a pawn after both ...Bxc6 and ...Nxc6. 11... Кc6 (11... Сc6 12. Сc5 bc5 13. Фg5 Just wins a pawn.) 12. Сc5 bc5 13. Кa4 Фe5 14. Фd6! and c5 falls.] 11... d6! A strong resource which was completely missed. 12. Кd6 We have a forced sequence of moves. [Maybe it was the lesser of evils to continue with 12. h4!? a6 13. Кd4 White still has some chances to gain a slight edge.] 12... Лd8 13. Сc5 bc5 14. Фf4 f6 15. Фg3 a6! [15... e5 16. Кdb5 is better for White, as Black doesn't have sufficient compensation for the pawn.] 16. Сe2 [A better option was 16. Кa4!? e5 (16... Кd4 17. e5! This is what I didn't see very deeply. (17. Кb7 Фb7 is bad for White.) 17... fe5 (17... Сc6 18. Кc5 Явное преимущество у белых) 18. Кb7 Кef5 19. Фe1 Фb7 20. Сd3 with a much more active version than in the game!) 17. Кb7 Лd1 18. Крd1 Фb7 looks tricky...but Black has nothing forcing. 19. Крc1 Фb4 20. Кc3 Кd4 21. Фf2 Лb8 22. Сd3 Though the computer shows its favourite 0.00 assessment, at least White is still a pawn up.] 16... Кd4 17. e5 [Again it was preferable to aim for 17. Кb7 Фb7 18. Лd2] 17... fe5 18. Кb7 Кef5 19. Фf2 Фb7 Surprisingly Black's pawn structure is not at all important and in fact he has the initiative. 20. Сd3 Лab8 21. Лhe1 Фc7 22. g4 An unnecessary weakening with the hope that some threats on the kingside will compensate for the weak f3-pawn. [Of course I had to play 22. Крb1 Фa5 23. Фd2! This pin on the d-file was bit annoying after 23... Кc6 24. Кd5! A fantastic resource which I missed. 24... Фd2 25. Лd2 Кd6 26. Кe3 e4! with an equal game.] 22... Кd6 23. Лe3 Лb4! 24. Фh4 [24. b3 Фa5! with a strong attack.] 24... h6 25. Лe5 This was the trick I was counting on! 25... Лdb8! Now here I realised to my horror that Black's attack is unstoppable! While my kingside attack is only an illusion... [25... Кf3 26. Лc5! Фb6 27. Фe7 Лe8 28. Фc7 Явное преимущество у белых] [25... Кc4 is also winning. 26. Лc5 (26. Сc4 Лc4) 26... Фf4 27. Крb1 Лb2 28. Крa1 Кc2 29. Сc2 Лd1 with mate.] 26. Лe6!? Let's funk it up!! [I rejected 26. g5!? because of 26... Кc4! winning. (26... Кf7!? was my opponent's intention.) (26... Кf3 27. Фg3 Кe5 28. Фe5 offers lots of hope.)] 26... Лb2! Ramirez was on top form this game! [Also winning was 26... Кe6 27. Кd5 Фb7! 28. b3 with some threats, though it shouldn't bother Black too much. (28. Кe7 Крf7! 29. Сg6 Крf8 is also equally hopeless.)] 27. Кd5 Фa5! This position was a lot of fun to analyse during the game and also in post-mortem. Unfortunately I don't have any way to continue my illusionary attack. 28. Фh5 [28. Лd6 (and Rxh6) allows 28... Лc2 29. Сc2 Кe2# was a cute mate.] [28. Кe7 Крf7 is just nothing.] [28. Лe7 Лb1 29. Сb1 Фa3 30. Крd2 Кf3 winning the queen.] 28... Кe6 The easiest. 29. Кe7 Крf8 30. Кg6 Крf7 [30... Крe8 31. Кe5 and Black will have to return to the game continuation.] 31. Фe5 Фa3 32. Кh8 Крg8 33. Фe6 Крh8 Finally checks run out and with it my chances of prolonging the game :).
