530,533,536,498,552,559] The Russian superfinals are well known for their
balanced field of participants and their exciting combative chess, so every
game played there is of great significance. But this duel with Vladislav
Artemiev was particularly important for me. A unique situation had arisen
before the seventh round: six players, of whom I was one, were leading on "+1"
(3.5 Punkte). But Vladislav was not one of them: after three rounds he had
been the sole leader in the table, but he went on to lose two games in
succession and this encounter between us was for him, the favourite for the
tournament, practically his only chance to get back in the struggle for a high
placing. In a word, this game could significantly change the course of the
tournament for each of us.
bedeutsam ändern.} 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 {To be honest, I thought that in this
situation Vlad would more likely go for the Slav Defence, which is also part
of his main repertoire. But the probability of a Grünfeld Defence was of
course also pretty high.
Nf3 Bg7 4.

ends up in any case in the main position for this system. anfangen können

O-O 9. Nc3 Re8 {And we have got there!

playing very quickly in this game, especially in the opening. I presume this
was due to his not being in the best psychological state at this point in time,
but the regrouping of pieces which he carried out could have been done during
preparation without a thorough analysis of the consequences. Purely optically
Black's plan looks all right - the knight goes to d6, no danger appears to
threaten Black by doing so and one might think that in the worst of cases for
Black what arises is a position which is slightly worse for him but
complicated and absolutely acceptable. Such an intuitive way of playing
combined with rapid and decent moves had already brought Artemiev many a
victory. The problem with this position, however, is that it is a dangerous
one to handle just according to the way it looks alone. The King's Indian
structures which flow from the present situation on the board appear really
dubious for Black despite the lovely Nd6. Firstly his other knight is very
unfortunately placed. Secondly - it is really hard for Black to achieve the
counterplay on the kingside which is typical of positions of this sort,
because White is well prepared for it: f7-f5 can be played, but f5-f4 will not
work, whereas the first player for his part has available a plan which needs
to be taken seriously for the strengthening of his position. Thus I think that
Black's last move is the basic cause for his future problems.
sauberer Ausführung brachte Artemiev bereits viele Siege.
weiteren Probleme ist.} ({There was a series of other continuations worthy of
